In basic terms, a motion is a kind of request made before a judge during any stage of legal proceedings. For example, very often in unlawful detainer proceedings/evictions and other civil matter a party may not be properly or timely served, or for other reasons may not answer the complaint on time, and thus be defaulted by the other side.
